Pain Management

Acupuncture for the treatment of pain:

Acupuncture is one part of a complete health care paradigm known as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). TCM originated in China and has been evolving over the past 3,000 years.

According to TCM theory there are channels that run throughout our bodies known as meridians.  Our body’s energy (qi) and essential nourishment (blood) flows on these channels.  In order for us to have optimum health qi and blood needs to flow smoothly.  When there is pain in the body it is seen as a warning bell, letting us know that the flow has been impaired.  There is either not enough energy to move the essential nourishment to a certain area or the energy is stuck somewhere causing a blockage.  Often times it is a little bit of both.  Either way pain is the result.

The goal of acupuncture treatment for pain is to restore the flow of energy in a smooth way.  Acupuncture points are specific spots on the meridians where the energy is both concentrated and accessible.  Points are chosen along the channels where you are experiencing pain to stimulate movement.

Additional points may be added to address any underlying issues, which may also be impacting the flow.  This is why a thorough intake is always completed even when pain is the only main concern of the patient.   When the flow is restored and underlying issues are resolved, pain relief is the result.

From a Western biomedical perspective, many theories exist to explain the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of pain. Research has shown that acupuncture can affect a number of body systems including: brain chemistry, hormone levels, endorphins, and neurotransmitters.  We also know through research that when an acupuncture needle is inserted into the body the area is flooded with natural pain-killers, circulation to the area is increased, and inflammation is reduced.
